Picture this: You’re sitting across from me and you’re telling me how you’re stuck in this endless loop of “start a diet, quit the diet, repeat.” Well, my friend, that is how our brains are wired. Our brain is just trying to protect us…yeah I know, sounds weird. But all is not lost, we know how to train the brain. Neuroplasticity to the rescue!! Neuroplasticity is the capacity of neurons and neural networks in the brain to change their connections and behaviour in response to new information and sensory stimulation. Here are 3 tricks to train it:
Turn New Habits into Brain Candy:
Start small. Tiny, even. Make it easier for your brain to adopt the change. For example: Want to drink more water? Easy. You’ll drink a glass every time you brush your teeth. Why? Because your brain loves pairing new habits with old ones. Before you know it, staying hydrated becomes automatic—no pep talks or sticky notes required.
Avoid Overwhelm and Trick Your Brain with Dopamine
Your brain has a love-hate relationship with change. Big, dramatic shifts? No, No. That’s like giving your amygdala (the brain’s panic button) a megaphone. Instead, we’d keep things quiet, sneak it in:
For example swap soda for sparkling water or add one veggie to your dinner. Then, we’d celebrate everything. Yes, I mean everything. Walked an extra block? High five! Ate one less cookie? Victory dance! Why? Because every little win releases dopamine, your brain’s happy juice. Motivation skyrockets when you’re constantly winning—even in small ways.
Calm the Chaos and Engage Your Prefrontal Cortex
When you’re stressed, your prefrontal cortex—the part of your brain that makes good decisions—basically shuts down. Ever gobbled candy or ice cream after a hard day at work? Yep, blame your stressed-out brain.
Learn tricks to stay cool, like mindfulness , breathing techniques, or even the underrated art of taking a 5-minute dance break. When your brain is chill, you’ll find it way easier to say, “No thanks, I’ll skip the third slice of pizza.”
Try these, if you need help on them or need more, let’s talk.
If I were coaching you, the goal wouldn’t be to brute-force your way to success. Instead, we’d work with your brain’s natural tendencies to make changes that feel doable, not dreadful.
No more white-knuckling diets or forcing workouts you hate. Just small, consistent steps that add up. And hey, with your brain on your side, who knows? You might even enjoy the process. (Okay, maybe not all of it—but most of it!)
So, ready to hack your brain for lasting health? Let’s make it happen—without burpees.
