No, no, no – it does not mean snacking while exercising. I know, I know… you wish it did.
But stay with me, because this idea is actually brilliant.
If you haven’t come across the phrase yet, it’s pretty easy to guess – exercise like you snack. Bits and pieces, here and there, throughout your day. No big commitment. No blocked-out hour. Just little bites of movement, whenever you can grab them.
If you read my post about stealing 15 minutes, you’ll know I’m already a fan of keeping things small and doable. Well, exercise snacking goes one step further. We’re not even talking 15 minutes here. We’re talking “a minute or less” spread through your day like, well… snacks.
But does it actually work?
Well, the research backs this up.
Research shows that short bursts of movement spread throughout the day can improve cardiovascular health, blood sugar regulation, energy levels, mood, and even fitness over time.
Short bursts of movement, done consistently, add up to real health benefits. Your body doesn’t care that you only moved for 60 seconds. It notices anyway.
So what does exercise snacking actually look like?
Here’s the fun part, it’s ridiculously easy to weave into your day.
At home:
- Commercial break? Get up and dance to the jingle. Yes, the jingle! Go all out. Terrify the dog.
- Feeling twitchy after sitting too long? Walk around the house. Oh you want harder? Drop and do 5 push-ups.
- After you brush your teeth, 5 squats.
- After a bathroom break – step away from the throne, please 😀 – and touch your toes.
At work:
- Just finished a meeting? Stand up and walk to the other end of the office before you sit back down.
- Feeling stiff? Stretch your arms above your head. Right now. Let them look, it’s thier problem 😉
- Got a call coming up? Take it walking.
- Better yet – suggest a walking meeting. You’ll be surprised how many people secretly love the idea.
- Waiting for something to load? Calf raises. Your computer is basically a fitness coach now.
No fancy equipment. No changing into gym gear. No membership fees. No scheduling hassels.
Just you, a little intention, and the good odd squat between brushing your teeth and making your coffee.
Anyway, let’s go snack now – the exercise type of snack 🙂
